Has the Internet Taken Over From the High Street for Shopping?
When you think about shopping, do you associate high street shopping or shopping on the Internet as your preferred choice? There are of course, disadvantages and advantages to each but which option is better overall? This could all depend upon on your personal preference or what is the most appropriate for buying goods at a particular time. This can also be affected by availability. A number of goods could only be obtainable either online or from a physical shop.
24 hour convenience
In today’s hectic twenty-four hour society when everything is driven by availability and time the world wide web can be an invaluable source when employed appropriately. When a significant number of individuals seem to be constantly short of time, the Internet is regularly used for the purchase of goods. It can also be a valuable first port of call if a shopper is seeking out information but looking to actually purchase a product in a shop or at a physical place instead of online. A good instance of this is purchasing a car. Frequently information is searched for surrounding possible purchases online but then the actual sale comes from a dealership. This is also the case when buying property. Information can normally be gleaned from a property website or an estate agency beforehand but the actual purchase is made on the high street. The Internet can also be good if you are time restricted. If you know exactly what you’re looking for, need something quickly but do not have the time to go to the high street during your standard working week, you can order something online and it can arrive the following day.
The Internet can save time
It can definitely be beneficial to do a proportion of your shopping online. For example, you could save at least one hour per week if you select your food shopping online and have it delivered to your property. The only downside to this is the charge taken for the delivery every week. Buying items like CDs and books online can also save time. In many cases items like these can also be cheaper to purchase online than on the high street. The Internet can also be a invaluable resource for the research and the purchase of non everyday products such as adult sex toys, Christmas or birthday presents and jewellery. Online banking can also be a far more convenient way of transferring money from one account to another than visiting a building society or a high street bank.
The advantages of the high street
If you have enough time to have a good look around, high street shopping can be a better choice. If you looking to purchase clothes from the high street, trying the items on in a changing room before buying guarantees that the garments are the correct fit. If you are purchasing clothes online, unless you have exactly the same item in your wardrobe already, you cannot ensure that it will fit. If you buy the item online from a respectable e-retailer and it does not fit you can of course send it back and in most cases exchange or refund it. If however you wish to surprise a loved one with some sexy lingerie, as long as you know what size they take, then either the high street or online should work equally as well. Whatever you want or need to purchase as a shopper, the high street offers the advantage of allowing you to view the actual product whether it be a CD, a book, shoes or clothing etc. The high street is also highly convenient if you wish to quickly buy a sandwich and/or a drink from a cafe or a newsagent and take it away with you. It also acts as a place to browse. For example, you might want to purchase a new electrical item like a TV and have seen it at a cheaper price online but wish to see it in the flesh prior to purchase. As mentioned earlier, this is also the case for the Internet.
On the whole there are advantages and disadvantages to buying goods online or from the high street. If you are time restricted for whatever reason, the Internet can be more convenient. However, if you have time to look around and want to view the physical goods before you buy them, high street shopping can have the upper hand. Essentially it is dependent on personal preference as to what works the best for the individual.
